On the Future Information Society
—The Technological Change in China and the "Internet +"
Wu Jing Yun Guoqiang
Abstract: Before the information society becomes real, it first exists in the form of discourse and discussions. These discussions have helped to build up the people’s expectations, imagination and understanding of the specific form of the information society, and they actively influence the development of information technology and social organization. On the basis of a critical analysis of the mainstream opinions about new information technology in China, especially the Internet technology, we can further understand how the elites create their imagination about information society, the inherent difference, and the source of factors influencing their notions. At the same time, by analyzing the changing social expectation and social imagination of information technology since the 1980s, we can draw a value spectrum of social expectation and social imagination relating to information technology and the Internet, and further construct a historical and critical perspective, which can be used to evaluate and explain the relationship between current discussions about new technology and industry on the one hand, such as the "Internet thinking" and the "Internet +", and social development model and direction on the other hand.
