Isolationism and the Policy Orientation of the United States
Ma Zhengang
Abstract: In some sense, isolationism originated from the US, its emergence and existence are closely related to the development and growth of the US. The "farewell speech" given by the first US president Washington at the end of his term of office was seen as a program of American isolationist foreign policy and followed by the later US governments. From the history of the US, it can be seen that isolationism was a wise policy choice as the US was still relatively weak after independence, which provided time and space for the development of the US. The successful implementation of that policy was also guaranteed by geographic advantages that the US was far away from the European continent and the country was in the middle of two oceans. From Trump's policy proposition and practice, he has a set of his own thinking and conceptual frameworks that reflect strong isolationism. The isolationist trend is ferocious, but looking at the world, globalization is still in rapid development, the underlying power is stronger than isolationism. The isolationist policy may help to solve a few problems in some countries such as the US, but it is impossible to solve all the problems. In the present-day era, isolationism cannot exist for a long time, and it is unlikely to spread globally.
